Dealing with Drill Cutting Waste during Bitumen Extraction

A group of progressive oil sands companies are looking for creative and innovative ways to effectively dispose of drill cuttings (drill waste) generated during the process of drilling wells for extracting bitumen by the Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) technology.  

This is an Ideation Challenge with a guaranteed award for at least one submitted solution.


Better Machines: Super Smooth and Tough Metal Surfaces

Novel methods to produce super smooth metal surfaces on load-bearing structures in gear assemblies are required. Multiple technologies are known to the Seeker – innovative adaptations of these, or completely new methods, are required. 

Although the Seeker highly values technologies or processes that can translate from other industries that apply surface science - e.g. medical devices, nanotechnology, packaging, or many others - proposals for novel materials or processes are also very welcome.

Self-Sealing Materials/Novel Installation Approaches for Sealing Gaps Between Wood Panels in Residential Construction

The Seeker desires a Solution for sealing the expansion joints between composite wood panels installed in a residential construction setting. The joint should be waterproof and airtight.  The Solution can be a manufacturing solution, a post-installation treatment of the joints on the job-site, or a hybrid of the two approaches.  

A manufacturing solution could include a modification of the composite wood in the panel itself, the addition of an engineered edge or coating to the panel, or other innovative approaches.  For example, can self-sealing technology (bio-based or polymers approaches) be incorporated into wood panels? Post-installation approaches to seal the joints on the job-site could include complements or improvements to current approaches of using liquid, aerosolized or foam sealants. 

This Challenge has unique terms, please read the Challenge-specific agreement carefully. 

  • Solvers grant the Seeker a non-exclusive license upon submission.  By submitting a proposal, Solvers grant to the Seeker a royalty-free, perpetual, and non-exclusive license to use any information or intellectual property included in the proposal and/or implementations.
  • There is a guaranteed award of $10,000.  The minimum total award for this Challenge is $10,000 (“Minimum Award”), which is guaranteed to be awarded.
  • Exclusive option at the Seeker’s discretion.  The Seeker may (at its sole discretion), award individual Solvers an additional $15,000 (“Additional Award”) to obtain ownership to that Solver’s submission.


Robust 3D Scanning Technology

The Seeker desires a 3-dimensional (3D) scanning technology that overcomes current limitations due to lighting, reflectivity, and especially multipath interference. The technology can be comprised of a software or hardware solution or a combination of both. 

This is a Reduction-to-Practice Challenge that requires a written proposal and experimental proof-of-concept data (and/or sample delivery).


Wireless Network for Industrial Equipment

The Seeker has an industrial application in which 100 devices communicate through hard wired networks. These devices run an electronic drive control application and include motors, switches, etc. All devices are inside an enclosed steel container. These devices generate a large amount of Electromagnetic Interference (EMI). Small bits of information are passed between devices very quickly at extremely short time intervals. Solvers are requested to propose designs to create a wireless system that handles all communications inside the container. 

This Challenge requires only a written proposal.


Corrosion Resistant Lining for Stainless Steel Process Equipment

The Seeker is searching for a partner who can help in the development of a corrosion resistant lining for stainless steel process equipment. We would like to adapt standard reaction vessels (316 SS, Hastelloy) so that they can be utilized under acidic conditions at high temperature and pressure. 

We are open to any solutions, but we envision some type of "coating" or "treatment" of exposed surfaces including reactor body and head, inlets/outlets, heat exchangers, fittings and valves. The potential partner should have potential solutions and the skills and equipment to produce the "coating" or "treatment" for the Seeker to test. A collaboration partnership will be established with an appropriate candidate.
